Best article I've read on improving Th1 immune response

I've been looking for a list of all foods and supplements that support the Th1 side of the immune system.  At the same time, I also wanted to know which foods and supplements to avoid because they stimulate the Th2 side.  I finally found this article, which provides a fairly exhaustive list of both.  Granted, I've never heard of the doctor who wrote it (even though his practice is a short 20 minute drive from me), but his article seems thoroughly supported by citations to reputable publications.

[5/29/12 update:  This article from DiagnoseMe.com also contains a similar list near the bottom of the page.  There are some interesting additions, like noni juice, thyroid medications, and something called "Neem."]

  1. This is very interesting information. I've been messing with my own diet since last spring. I tried an elimination diet which made me herx my way to bedridden. So after doing a bunch of reading and discovering Dr. Terri Wahls' remarkable story I decided to try another experiment and I went Paleo last September. I experienced various levels of improvement and the article you posted explains why. I started eating pastured meats which have much higher omega 3 levels and conjugated linoic acid than feedlot beef. There is a noticeable improvement of brain function with the pastured meats. I also started drinking raw milk which has resulted in some reduction of inflammation in my sinuses and lungs. Apparently it also aids the body with glutathione production. Going completely grain free cleared up a lot of the digestive issues I was having. I also started eating bone broths (as soups) and gelatin to heal my guts which have worked very well. I've since added dairy back in and also brown rice and sweet potatoes so I'm now following a Primal diet which is working very well for me. This spring I've been experimenting with sun exposure. I've discovered I have to have sun exposure every three days or so or I start running out of energy. Now this intersects with the Paleo diet since suddenly I don't get sunburns anymore. I guess the high omega 3 levels in my diet have changed my skin chemistry. Instead of getting burned I feel like the sun is recharging my battery. Here is a blog you might be interested in: http://stephanie-on-health.blogspot.com/ It isn't about CFS/ME specifically but has some interesting stuff to say about the immune system.

    1. That is really interesting stuff, Baffled. I too think diet is a key to improving. It's certainly not the whole kit and caboodle, but it's an important puzzle piece. My GI tract issues disappeared nearly overnight when I switched to a low carb, no sugar, no grain diet. It's been so nice to have one less symptom to worry about.

    2. All my life I've probably had a T2 dominant response, which is evident by the symptoms outlined in that second article you linked to. It seems that based on western lifestyles, many people probably have the same imbalance skewed towards T2. Appreciate your post!
